Being Productive

I’ve made an appointment to talk to a career counselor about when to look for jobs in LA. I’m asking my former classmates/peers about how they went about the job searching process before moving and asking about where they live (what it’s like, how much rent is, etc.). I’m going through entertainment sites based in LA and contacting staff writers for advice and to talk about their previous work. I’m reading books on journalism again.

Yep, being productive with this moving thing. πŸ™‚

  1. Have you thought of free-lancing it to begin with, to gather a portfolio: touch base with the local paparazzi’s, find out what pubs or bars they hang in, begin tapping them for information on events, activities, gossip, etc. Write up your own stuff, create a persona, something ironic and satiric, humorous, send your stuff out to some of the online mags, etc. In other words do some baby steps and learn the trade then take your portfolio with you to some of the outlets that need an entertainment journalist: show them your gutsy and will get the job done πŸ™‚

    • I actually do have an online portfolio: up until now I’ve been volunteer writing for publications. As for the paps, I don’t want to do gossip entertainment writing; think Hollywood Reporter-type writing. πŸ™‚ Interviews, reviews, stuff like that. I’ll take your “show them your gutsy and will get the job done” advice to heart!
